CIMA is committed to caring for patients’ needs throughout their hospitalization by using our hospitalists. Our hospitalists specialize in internal medicine or family practice and are members or affiliates of CIMA.

What is a Hospitalist and do I need one?

Hospitalists are doctors and advanced practice practitioners who oversee patients’ care while they are in the hospital. They are usually specialists in internal medicine or family practice but also specialize in hospital care. Because the hospital is one of their primary sites of practice they are more familiar with the hospital system and its function. The hospitalist will communicate with your primary care physician while he/she manages your care during your hospital stay.

Medical cutbacks brought on by managed healthcare have resulted in the need for doctors who specialize in hospital care. Many primary care physicians are unable to make hospital visits to care for their individual patients because of time and economic constraints. Many primary care physicians have hospitalists cover for them. This has proven to be a more efficient method for providing quality care.

Who follows up after I am discharged from the hospital?

You should make a follow up appointment with your primary care physician after you are discharged from the hospital. Be sure to take with you any changes in medication or diet prescribed for you during your hospital stay. You may ask for a complete discharge summary upon your release from the hospital to take with you to your follow up appointment.

Be Proactive

You should always carry a list of:

  • Your current medications and dosages
  • Your allergies
  • Your medical conditions and current treatments
  • Physicians names and phone numbers.

This will better enable your doctors to provide the best care possible.
